Best Practice – How Ballad Health Transformed their Radiothon into a Million-Dollar Event

After thirteen years of successful Radiothons, Ballad Health Foundation leaders and key volunteers knew they had the potential to have a million-dollar Radiothon but doing so would require integrating major gifts into the event. At the time, the foundation was one year into a 30-million-dollar capital campaign to expand Niswonger Children’s Hospital. The team was aware that a couple, who were long-time supporters, were contemplating a major gift toward the expansion. These longtime supporters were also close friends with the original volunteer founder of Radiothon as well as the first to make a sponsorship gift in support of the inaugural Radiothon. So, the idea of a major gift to Radiothon began.
The couple agreed to a $100,000 matching gift to kick off what was intended to be the first one-million-dollar Radiothon for Niswonger Children’s. This gift motivated foundation volunteers and staff to secure three additional six-figure gifts as well as motivated listeners and views. On top of having their first one-million-dollar Radiothon, the Tri-Cities market saw a 97% YOY increase!
